The journey between the two Holy Cities is around 450 km, and there are three sensible ways to make it. None of them is “best” for everyone — it depends on your group, your luggage and your priorities.
Here is an honest comparison, including where our own service is not the right answer.
The Haramain high-speed train
Journey time: about 2 to 2.5 hours between Makkah and Madinah stations.
Good for: couples and small groups with light luggage who enjoy the experience of the train, and who are comfortable managing station transfers at both ends.
Worth knowing:
- The stations are not in the city centres. Makkah’s station is at Rusaifah and Madinah’s is outside the central area — so you still need transport at both ends, which people often forget when comparing cost.
- Boarding closes before departure. Arrive early.
- Luggage allowance is limited compared to a private vehicle.
- If you want to stop at the Miqat for Ihram, the train cannot do that.
Private car or van
Journey time: about 4.5 hours, plus stops.
Good for: families, groups, anyone with lots of luggage, elderly pilgrims, and anyone who wants a Miqat stop.
Worth knowing:
- Door to door — hotel lobby in Makkah to hotel lobby in Madinah. No station transfers.
- You can stop at Miqat Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) on the Madinah→Makkah direction to enter Ihram, and stop for prayer, food or rest whenever you like.
- Priced per vehicle, so the more people travelling together, the better the value.
- Longer than the train in raw hours — but often similar door to door once you count getting to and from the stations.
Bus
Journey time: 6 to 8 hours with stops.
Good for: travellers on the tightest budget who don’t mind a long day.
Worth knowing: fixed schedules, multiple stops, limited luggage space, and difficult with young children or elderly parents.
So which should you choose?
- Travelling as a couple, light luggage, enjoy trains? Take the Haramain train, and book a car at each end.
- Family, group, heavy luggage, or elderly travellers? A private vehicle is almost always easier and often works out similar in total cost.
- Need to enter Ihram at the Miqat? It has to be a private vehicle.
- Budget is the only concern? The bus.
