Many pilgrims pass through Jeddah twice and never see it. If your flight leaves late, or you arrive with a day in hand, a half-day in Jeddah turns waiting time into part of the journey.
The heart of it is Al-Balad, the old walled town and a UNESCO World Heritage site — coral-stone houses with carved wooden balconies, narrow lanes, and souqs that have traded since the days when every pilgrim arrived by sea through this port.
Then out to the Corniche along the Red Sea, past the King Fahd Fountain, and to the Floating Mosque (Masjid Al-Rahmah) built out over the water — a beautiful place to pray as the sun goes down.
